20 minutes ago, [livejournal.com profile] madders sent me a recipe for 5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake. Now I'm sitting here eating chocolate cake and telling you all about it, because really? It's Chocolate! Cake! In Five Minutes! What's not to love?

4 tablespoons flour (self-raising/rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional, I had none to hand so did without)
a small splash of good vanilla
1 large coffee mug (I used a pint mug)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (optional) and vanilla, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes on high.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

I cheated a little and used a second mug so that I could beat the egg, milk, oil and vanilla together before adding it to the dry ingredients, but that's just because I'm lazy. *g*

In conclusion: OM NOM NOM!

You silly. You're not supposed to heap when you measure, unless it tells you to. You're supposed to use a butter knife or something and level it.

:)

See, I know this, I do! But when I actually get to the measuring of things... the heaping, it calls to me. Which then leads to the extra splash of this and a dash of that and... and I end up with extra, or bigger, or completely different from what it started out as. :D

Heeeee!
I can see making lasagna that way or something...but not cake. All that flour-stuff makes me paranoid. It has gluten! It will get....funny! Heh.

*i watch too much Good Eats, it's true*

I like experimenting. More than measuring, apparently. *g*

I don't watch cooking shows. They make me hungry and I never have the necessary ingredients to assuage that hunger. Seeing the stuff cooked, all steaming hot and ready, makes me want to eat it now now now.

So, instead, I go on internet raids and find three or four versions of a particular recipe. Then I juggle ingredients and replace and swap and omit things until I have something that calls to me. And then I try to remember to take the ingredients list with me when I go out shopping. :D

I don't watch a *lot* of them. One or two. 'Good Eats' appeals to me because he talks about the science of cooking. Explains *why* you add the flour first, or how different kinds of milk - skim, whole, 2 percent - will change your food.

A lot of fun, oh yes, a lot. I like geekery with my meals! Heh.

I rather like to experiment and such, but only with *some* things. I am timid! :)

Now that sounds like a program I would watch because it's science! Science with food! I would very much watch that and take notes and then go experiment in my kitchen... This may not be a good thing. *g*

My experimenting can be very adventurous sometimes. 'I like A and I like B, so if I put them together and add C and D for kicks, it should work, right?'

I've eaten some very odd things, but I have more successes to my credit than failures.

And now I have to go throw some chili together because all this has made me hungry for something besides cake. :D

eeeeee! *bookmarks*

The chili is on, and simmering away nicely. I've always made it with minced (ground) beef, which has caught me some stick from the Texans and other chili afficionados I know, so a couple of weeks ago I saw some diced beef on special and decided to give it a go.

O. M. G. It's completely different and so much better! Now I can never make chili with mince again. *g*

This pot will do me tonight and for my b'day feast tomorrow, which may or may not end with 5 minute chocolate cherry cake. (I have frozen cherries in my freezer! Why did I not remember this sooner?)

And I will be studying at the feet of *checks site* Alton Brown. A-ha! So that's the guy everyone keeps talking about. Now I knows. :D

Wheeeee!
I, personally, find minced *ground* beef rather revolting, and really don't like it. I don't actually like chili, either - well, i don't like *beans*, so....

But yeah, cubed would be more tasty.
:)

And yes! There was some 'to do' over him as he apparently said something along the lines of 'people are just too fat, they need to get up off the couch and do something'.

Of course, everyone went ballistic. Myself, i agree - people need to get up and move.

Your b-day! OMG!!!
*twirls you*

Yeesh. Tis the truth. Get over it. ;)

Yes! And it's after midnight here so I am now officially 39. Only one year left before life begins, so they say. I'd best make the most of it. *g*

Thank you! *smooches and smishes*

I plan to have a wonderful day. I took the whole week off work to make sure of it. *g*

There will be chili, and icecream and pancakes, with frozen cherries and raspberries, and whisky and wonderful fic. :D

Sounds awesome, bay-bee.

And wtf, skinny comments? I thought the collapse/expand thing was supposed to fix that?

I've had two posts with conversations like these and they both got all skinny and fucked up. I hate!

Did we accidentally turn something off or something?

I honestly don't know. I haven't had a convo this long on lj for aaaaaaaages. That'll teach me not to lurk about in dark corners and not comment or post. *g*

It's probably down to specific layout settings that don't have a tweak available on the Modify Layout page.

Bah.

Just realised I forgot to respond to your no-beans thing. There are a lot of recipes out there for no-bean chili. A lot of chili purists claim that putting beans in chili is the devil's work. Combine diced beef (browned), tomato, diced onions and chopped/flaked chilis in whatever combination of flavours and textures works for you, then simmer until you can't resist the smell any more. *g*

OH, i know. I just..... Eh. Chili doesn't do it for me. I'd rather stew. Or a good pot pie, or soup.

*smooch*
