A/N: It wasn't until I started writing the second drabble that my Muse informed me why she'd chosen Seattle when I wrote the first set, 'Working Together', for challenge #79, 'Work'. She whispered in my ear that there were old, forgotten, tunnels under Seattle, so I googled, and whaddaya know, she was right!
Dress Up
For fifteen years he'd waited, watched his consort working hard to earn respect and build self-worth and 'make it big'. And finally his patience had paid off. Xan was home, and unemployed, this time by choice, which made the biggest difference in the world. He'd quit, for Spike, and Spike had fifteen years of plans, ideas, and games for them to play now office politics could hold no sway.
Firstly, that horrific pinstripe wardrobe had to go. A consort dressed in leather and in silks befits a Master of Seattle, and those plans had waited now for far too long.
King Of The Castle
Six months later and William the Bloody was in charge. The thoroughfares and long-forgotten tunnels of Seattle ran with demon blood for weeks until, eventually, a compromise was found. And once the city's Master, in control since 1853, was dust, all the minions who had been his faithful servants saw their futures in the writing on the wall.
A much reduced, and mostly non-vampiric Court was formed. The Master and his consort shared the power while the vampire held the throne. The name Aurelius, the tales of Angelus and Dru, made sure that no one dared to take a stand.
Playing The Game
Xander, in his silk and leather finery, often sat at Spike's right hand, or at his feet if guests were prone to make a fuss. And while he lounged about and acted bored and unconcerned, he listened, learned and afterwards discussed what he had seen. Eventually the word got out that, while Spike held the power, his consort was the tempering hand of justice. The wiser demons knew to shape their pleadings for his ears, while making sure to pay their deep obeisances to Spike.
The vampire and the human ruled the city, blood and bone, above, below and in-between.
The Game of Life
A hint of mermaid's blood and the well-tamed ghost of a wild hyena spirit. A demon magnet, born and bred and mated on the mouth of hell. Xander's soul was made of all these things and more, and his life was stretched beyond the bounds of nature by his choices and the magic that lay hidden in his veins. But eventually, his spark began to flicker and to dim, and insubstantial evidence of age began to show. The game of life was drawing to an end and so a choice was made.
And now a vampire couple run the show.

on 2004-10-26 02:12 am (UTC)Spike deserves a chance to be Master of his own city. And Seattle has tunnels - a whole 'nother city underground for all the demons and monsters and such! Just perfect. :o)

on 2004-10-26 03:32 am (UTC)I love Xander being the power behind the throne, as it were.

on 2004-10-26 03:46 am (UTC)I see them as partners. Spike has the ruthlessness, the violence, in him that allows him to get things done one way or another. Xander is the one who would put on the brakes, or come up with the non- or less- violent approach and explain how it would be worth more to them to do things that way.
Of course, now he's vamped, all bets are off... *g*

"Damn you, Darkhavens, damn you!"

on 2004-10-26 05:22 am (UTC)He's so pretty as a vampire you just have to love him. *g*
Thanks. :o)
The third one is my favourite, because it brings Xander into Spike's world and gives him purpose and power.

on 2004-10-26 09:52 pm (UTC)Yeah, Playing The Game was the hardest one to write because I could see it, it just wouldn't come out properly. I think I deleted 3 or 4 partial drabbles because I wasn't happy with the way it showed Xander, and then I got that first line out and the rest fell into place. Xander just can't help being a white hat and it practically shines from him sometimes. :o)

on 2004-10-27 12:47 am (UTC)Tunnels. They're cool. I had to research them a little for 'Credence'... Seattle has an interesting history.
:)

on 2004-10-27 03:58 am (UTC)These were all indeed awesome, but I LOVED The Game of Life, it was my fave; beautiful, deft touch you have with the drabble-age. I'd be jealous if I wasn't so busy being in awe...
Wow. I'd bow again, but my knees are already killing me, so my hat's off to you *takes off hat, humbly*

on 2004-10-27 05:58 am (UTC)I have a tendency to end up turning Xander, especially in drabble form, just because I don't want to see him get old and die and have Spike be left alone and grieving. They have to be together, forever. But there's no reason why Xander can't hang around as a consort/mate for a hundred years or so first...
Nice hat. ;o)
