5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

20 minutes ago, [livejournal.com profile] madders sent me a recipe for 5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake. Now I'm sitting here eating chocolate cake and telling you all about it, because really? It's Chocolate! Cake! In Five Minutes! What's not to love?

4 tablespoons flour (self-raising/rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional, I had none to hand so did without)
a small splash of good vanilla
1 large coffee mug (I used a pint mug)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (optional) and vanilla, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes on high.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

I cheated a little and used a second mug so that I could beat the egg, milk, oil and vanilla together before adding it to the dry ingredients, but that's just because I'm lazy. *g*

In conclusion: OM NOM NOM!

That's so funny. My mom sent me something similar a month or so ago, and then i read about it on lj and followed some links and read a *lot* of 'ooh, so gross!!' reviews.

So neat! I'm glad it worked for you. I'm prolly gonna try it myself some day - Monstrous will certainly like it.

:)

It's the most dangerous cake recipe in the world, so says the email. Because if you have the ingredients, you're never more than 5 minutes away from chocolate cake!

I apoologise for torturing you with forbidden goodies. Bookmark this and mark your calendar for the day after Lent ends. OM NOM NOM!

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I;ve had better cake, but not faster cake. And if you have one of those 'OMG I need chocolate cake, STAT!' moments at 3am, this is the solution. *g*

I think it would probably be a fun thing for kids too. I might share this at work with co-working parents (and chocoholics). :D

Mine was a bit dry, but then I'm a terrible tablespoon heaper, which is fine for the dry ingredients, but not so simply done with the wet stuff. That'e easily fixed with some icecream or regular cream or even a little fruit couli, I would imagine.

Ah, i shall have to remember that and perhaps add a touch more oil/milk.

You'd think with one whole egg, dryness would *not* be a problem.

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You would think. But I heap those tablespoons. Well, not the last one - that's usually practically level cos the guilt's kicked in by then.

I think I might try adding a splash of raspberry liqueur next time, just for kicks. *g*

Mmmmmmmmmmmh that sounds really good.

Too bad that the Hero did everything in his powers until he had persuaded me to give up the microwave. =(

Who doesn't trust a microwave??!!

[identity profile] madders.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I too have cake now *g*

Mine's a bit dry- but then I lack a tablespoon, so therefore have been guessing all my measurements LOL!

I solved the problem by serving it with ice cream ;o)

Mmmmmmmmmm caaaaaaaaaake

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He... Oh, dear. Silly boy. No cake for him! *g*

I think it's a recipe I'll play with, adding and subtracting and substituting until I find my perfect cupmugcake. :D

If you have a friend with a microwave, talk them into sharing! It's a good recipe for a movie night or a girls' night in.

[identity profile] katbcoll.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooooo I saved it. Don't actually have some of the ingredients. Which is a really good thing! :D

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have tablespoons? I... cannot imagine a kitchen without tablespoons. You must rectify this immediately. It hurts my brain. I... *flails* Immediately!

Ice cream is never the wrong solution. :D

I've just recently been bit by the baking/cooking bug. After over 35 years of blissful can-opening and microwaving, and freezer-to-oven dinners, I suddenly want to make things from actual ingredients.

I have two types of flour and three types of sugar in my kitchen. I have bakeware and a random urge to scour the net for recipes. I keep visiting Argos and Amazon online, comparing food processors and blenders and other kitchen gadgets.

My mother bought me digital kitchen scales for Xmyth and I squeed out loud.

Maybe it's hormonal. ;)

[identity profile] madders.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a little cup thingy that measures liquids in tablespoons- but then I don't have an actual tablespoon *g*

I will be going out and getting one soon- because yes, I really, really need one!!!

[identity profile] madders.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*butts head in*

http://www.allrecipes.co.uk (or .com for the US version).

Excellent recipes of all kinds, plus you can adjust the measurements for different portion sizes... so you can change it for 1 or 2 portions instead of 4!

;o)

I have a little cup thingy that measures liquids in tablespoons

And now I'm picturing you measuring out baking ingredients using one of those little cups they give out with some cough medicines. HAHAHA!

You silly. You're not supposed to heap when you measure, unless it tells you to. You're supposed to use a butter knife or something and level it.

:)

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh! Thanks. *bookmarks*

I do a lot of my hunting at Recipezaar (http://www.recipezaar.com/).

I have an Opera widget and a carefully compiled txt file to help with US-UK measurement conversions.

I do like the idea of the website scaling up/down portions for me though. Definitely worth investigating. :D

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I know this, I do! But when I actually get to the measuring of things... the heaping, it calls to me. Which then leads to the extra splash of this and a dash of that and... and I end up with extra, or bigger, or completely different from what it started out as. :D

[identity profile] madders.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah- it's like a little tiny measuring jug *g*

[identity profile] madders.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhh *bookmarks*

I have a well-used set of US measuring cups so I don't have to worry about conversions *g*

Heeeee!
I can see making lasagna that way or something...but not cake. All that flour-stuff makes me paranoid. It has gluten! It will get....funny! Heh.

*i watch too much Good Eats, it's true*

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting me some of those. They will make life so much easier. :D

Now, if only there was a list of actual ingredient conversions! In a 'I say swede, you say rutabaga', 'you say *brand name* item, I say... whuh?' *g*

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I like experimenting. More than measuring, apparently. *g*

I don't watch cooking shows. They make me hungry and I never have the necessary ingredients to assuage that hunger. Seeing the stuff cooked, all steaming hot and ready, makes me want to eat it now now now.

So, instead, I go on internet raids and find three or four versions of a particular recipe. Then I juggle ingredients and replace and swap and omit things until I have something that calls to me. And then I try to remember to take the ingredients list with me when I go out shopping. :D

I don't watch a *lot* of them. One or two. 'Good Eats' appeals to me because he talks about the science of cooking. Explains *why* you add the flour first, or how different kinds of milk - skim, whole, 2 percent - will change your food.

A lot of fun, oh yes, a lot. I like geekery with my meals! Heh.

I rather like to experiment and such, but only with *some* things. I am timid! :)

I've just been talking about [livejournal.com profile] spn_betas in another journal and reminded myself that it had been a while since I did my modly duty and took a quick peek to see how good (or bad) the take-up rate is, and guess who I found volunteering in the most recent post!

*has warm fuzzy feelings*

You rock! :D
