At the Carnival

The wheel was old and worn, with peeling paint and bright new bolts scattered in amongst the dull ones. Rodney spent ten minutes quizzing the attendant and the carnival's engineer-cum-mechanical whizz.

Later, John couldn't remember a thing about the view.

But he remembered the smile in Rodney's eyes, the way the garish lights painted him in blues and greens and reds. He remembered the taste of cotton candy in Rodney's mouth, the curls at the nape of Rodney's neck beneath his fingertips.

He remembered slipping the attendant twenty dollars to leave them alone till the carnival was over.

He remembered.
