14 Valentines, post #1 - kanji icons
Feb. 2nd, 2007 02:21 amThis is my first contribution to the
14valentines project. Today's featured cause is Women in Academics.
102 Kanji icons
Most of the original images come from www.tribalshapes.com, as do most of the translations. Please speak up if you spot an egregious error.
ETA:
staranis has provided some additional information on a few of the Kanji symbols, so I have amended the labelling of the icons based on images 1, 15 and 74.
Comments are nice - credit is only necessary for the icons with text - the textless ones may be used as bases.
admiration and devotion (ETA "Shinpuku" means "to follow someone's orders with respect" (as in a master/servant relationship). It's a very submissive word.)

on 2007-02-02 02:37 am (UTC)I swear, they've taken longer to upload and code than they did to make. I have a lot more ready to go up, I just can't upload/name/tag/code any more right now. *g*
I haven't even looked at my flist yet today and it's already tomorrow here! *g*

on 2007-02-02 03:28 am (UTC)I went through several font in the first few sets but then stumbled onto 'Stylograph' and stayed with it. *g*
I have no idea where I got it from but Google would probably be able to help if you want it.

on 2007-02-02 09:12 pm (UTC)I didn't have one for 'ponder', but I just googled and found a Kanji dictionary that lets you search using English and voila! (http://kanji.sapp.org/cgi-bin/kinfo?oneill=0500)
I can make one for you or you can make it yourself, whichever you prefer. :D

on 2007-02-02 03:50 pm (UTC)#15 - According to my dictionary, "bokkaku" means "master calligrapher". I'd use "geijutsuka" for artist in general (incl. painter, designer, sculptor, photographer, musician, writer), or "bijutsuka" for visual artist.
#74 - This one is a very formal word used to refer to someone's daughter. You don't use this word when you refer to your own daughter.
#96 – I had never seen this one. It's an old word. I'd translate "dignity", "pride" to "hokori" or "jisonshin".
ps. #1 – "Shinpuku" means "to follow someone's orders with respect" (as in a master/servant relationship). It's a very submissive word. I think I'd translate "devotion" to "kenshin". That means you do something for someone because you love/admire them, not because the person is in a higher social class or has some authority over you.

on 2007-02-02 09:25 pm (UTC)Thanks for the info. I've added a bit of explanatory text where appropriate, and I'm so very glad that none of them were inadvertently rude or completely offbase. :D
