Book meme

[livejournal.com profile] kyrieane tagged me when she did this, and who am I to argue? I love my books, though they've been woefully neglected since I discovered slash. *g*

1. Total number of books I've owned: I'd have to guess at about the 10,000 mark, and about 7,000 of them are still with me.

2. Last book I bought: Potter's Cyclopedia of Botanical Drugs and Preparations, 5th Edition, 1941

3. Last book I read: Watchers, by Dean Koontz

4. 5 books that mean a lot to me:
The Stand by Stephen King - I try to read the unabridged editin at least once a year
Ages in Chaos by Emmanual Velikovsky - history revised
The Oxford Paperback Dictionary and Thesaurus - my bible!
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C S Lewis - this book (series) gave my imagination wings
Men In Love by Nancy Flowers - insight into the sexual fantasies of men, in their own words!

5. Tag 5 people and have them fill this out in their LJs:
[livejournal.com profile] literati, [livejournal.com profile] coffee_quill, [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue, [livejournal.com profile] ponders_life and [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui

::adds it to the list::

Naaaaaaaaaaaarnia! Love those books so much!

Me too. I won my first copy of LWW aged 9 in a spelling quiz, and I fell hard and fast for Narnia and all the wonderful critters within.

I love the fact that you listed a dictionary/thesaurus as one of your five! :)

:D

Like I said - it's my bible. It lives on my desk, less than 6 inches from my keyboard and it gets opened at least once a day - more if I'm actually writing. *g*

Have you considered getting a digital version? That way you can just type it in to search, do searches of partial words with wildcard characters, and cut/paste if needed.

I've got mine (Merriam-Webster 11th Collegiate Dictionary, Random House Roget's Thesaurus) on my PDA so I have it everywhere I go. :)

I'm definitely tempted, and this one is 8 years old... Hmmm.

You're evil, you know that, right? Now I have to go and drool over the pretty digital dictionaries. *g*

Evil? Moi? Nuh uh! If I were evil, I'd be urging you to get a digital encyclopedia as well! ;)

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2005-05-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Who needs a digital encyclopedia when there's always google? *g*
Even if I do end up getting a digital dictionary/thesaurus, I think the 'reach for the book' action is so ingrained I'll only remember the digital version when I've got fingers stuck in various pages and I'm flipping madly back and forth. :P

Word to your mother. I read something other than slash last month, and it about blew my poor little mind. Wow...words that don't include Spike or Xander or any mention of a Hellmouth...weird. :) I love "The Stand", too, I think it's probably his most ambitious work, although "The Shining" will always be my SK fave. I'll get to work on this for ya...

The Shining is a wonderful book, it gives me the shivers every time I read it. Such a terrifying idea, being stuck in the middle of nowhere like that.

I nagged a friend into watching the Jack Nicholson movie just a week before he actually went to stay in the hotel they used to shoot the exteriors. (Yeah, I'm evil, we know this already *g*) Apparently he spent the entire week jumping at every unexpected sound. Hee!

I can't wait to read your choices!
