Seeing Things

The snatches and flashes of second sight never failed to leave Xander feeling just the slightest bit off-balance, but this was different. This time the room turned itself inside out, folded sideways, took his stomach with it and he dropped.

He wouldn't have been surprised to open his eyes to see a coronet of madly tweeting birds or flashing stars around his head, but all he saw was grubby, giant letters upside down and a sea of flickering lights on the horizon. He blinked.

"Shit! Spike! I know where they are! Dru's got Connor tied up by the Hollywood sign!"



Like A Top

Dru turned faster and faster, arms outstretched, layers of silk and lace belling out around her. A madly spinning top, attention focussed on the moon between the quickly moving, storm-tossed clouds. And then she stopped, staggered, giggled once and dropped like a stone, arms and legs bent at awkward angles. She sighed.

"Daddy's not happy, Spike, he needs his growly puppy. Puppies should be trained before you let them in the house."

Spike glanced at Xander sitting in the car, unconscious Connor draped across his lap.

"Dru, luv, you know Angelus likes his pups warm-blooded. Bastard likes to play first."



Foiled

The incessant throbbing in Connor's head came into focus first. It pulsed behind his eyes like a second, mutant heart. Next came the puzzling realisation that he was naked. The cool night air sent random tiny shivers through his frame.

A voice, too close and cheery, had him struggling to sit up, bewildered by the lack of where or when or who or why.

"Hi, I'm Xander. I think we're kinda family."

And suddenly Connor realised what he meant. This man was cold.

His frantic dive for freedom through the open car door was foiled by a single pale fist.
